What is PocketTerra?
PocketTerra is a collection of Microsoft.NET Compact Framework components for GPS and Mapping. It is designed to use topographic maps and aerial photos from the Microsoft TerraServer web services.

A programmer can use these components to easily create a custom PocketPC field data collection application using Visual Studio .NET 2003.

For what applications is PocketTerra most useful?

Field data collection applications where it makes sense to use Topographic maps and/or aerial photographs with a GPS.

The Compact Framework combined with SQL Server CE and an SQL Server host makes it very easy to update a SQL server database with data collected in the field.

For example, PocketTerra was originally designed to collect information about oil and gas wells in very rural areas.

Is PocketTerra a road map with vehicle routing?

While the Topographic maps show roads, the maps are strictly raster (scanned maps), and do not contain any routing information.
Is there map data for other countries?
At this time, no. The TerraServer only has data for the continental USA.
Can I use my own map data or aerial photographs?
Yes! We have completed a program that allows you to import just about any raster map, in any format or geographic projection. Please contact us for more information.
Can I display my own SHP files?
No. At this time, we have chosen to keep things simple by only displaying point features. All that is needed to display a point feature is a Latitude Longitude or UTM location in the database.
What PocketPCs will work with PocketTerra?

Just about any Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 2002, 2003, WM5) based unit. For example, the HP IPaq, Dell Axim, Toshiba, T-Mobile etc.

See:www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/hardware/americas.asp

for a list. Note that you need a place to plug in a GPS, and probably an SD memory card as well since the maps require a lot of memory. We provide an installation for ARM/XScale CPUs, but it would be possible to use other CPUs.

Right now, the Dell Axim or the IPaq 2215 may be the best bet since they have both a CF slot to plug a GPS, and an SD slot for more memory. The 2215 also has Bluetooth so you can use a Bluetooth GPS. This frees up the CF slot for a camera or a phone, plus the Bluetooth GPS has a separate battery.

The IPaq 6315 with a Bluetooth GPS is close to the ultimate. It has WiFi and GPRS Internet connectivity so you can download maps just about anywhere!

The IPaq 6515 is even better! It has a built in GPS and keyboard for entering data!

What GPS units will work with PocketTerra?
Just about any GPS that you can connect to a PocketPC. These range from built in GPS, to CF cards, SD cards, and Bluetooth GPS receivers.  Any GPS that emulates a serial port on the PocketPC should work.
