Field Data Collection using PocketTerra
Field data collection is the primary intended use for the PocketTerra controls. The advantages of using PocketTerra for designing a field data collection program are:
  • PocketPCs are small, lightweight, and inexpensive.
  • GPS receivers for PocketPCs are also small and inexpensive, and plug directly into the PocketPC (or via Bluetooth) - one less thing to carry.
  • The screens on most PocketPCs are very readable outside in direct sunlight, and have enough resolution to display detailed topo maps and aerial photographs.
  • It is easy to update your central SQL Server database with data collected in the field using PocketTerra since it uses the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework.
  • The highly detailed topographic maps and aerial photos used by PocketTerra are downloadable free from the Microsoft TerraServer.
  • Custom programs using the PocketTerra controls are reliable and easily written using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET.
  • PocketTerra is royalty-free, so that custom programs using PocketTerra can be distributed to many users with no additional charge besides the initial developer kit cost.
This all adds up to a very cost-effective, reliable and efficient way to provide a field data collection program to your organization.
