Free Downloadable TerraServer Data
The base maps used by PocketTerra are USGS Topographic maps and USGS aerial photographs downloaded from the Microsoft TerraServer Web Services. PocketTerra provides an easy to use interface to download these maps.
Download the maps you will need while the PocketPC is connected to its docking station, then use them in the field. Or, if you have a wireless Internet connection, you could even download the maps you need while in the field.
Topographic Maps:
These maps are the most current topographic maps from the USGS at several scales. The largest scale is the most detailed 1:24000 (7.5 minute quadrangles). These are the most detailed topographic maps available from the USGS. Other scale maps are the 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 scale USGS topographic maps. As the user zooms in or out, the different scale maps are displayed automatically as appropriate.
Aerial Photographs:
The USGS has created a series of very accurate aerial photographs called Digital Ortho Photo Quarter Quadrangles (DOQQs). The resolution of the photographs is 1 meter per pixel and are accurate to within 8 feet. The TerraServer has all of the DOQQs for the continental USA at a variety of resolutions. PocketTerra will download all of the resolutions appropriate for a selected map area and as the user zooms in or out, the different scale maps are displayed automatically.
